3dfx Voodoo5 6000 Watercooling Edition: Beeindruckende Fan-Mod für die Quad-SLI-Karte
Der Kult um 3dfx treibt so manchen Fan zu Höchstleistungen. Nachdem wir vor ein paar Wochen über eine Modifikation der Voodoo 5 6000 berichteten, die den 3dfx-Prototypen zu 200 MHz Taktfrequenz trieb, folgt nun ein Wechsel der Elemente: Anstelle eines monströsen Luft- soll es ein eigens konstruierter Wasserkühler richten.
Was für einige Menschen unter Grabschändung fällt, entlockt anderen große Bewunderung und Faszination. 3dfx' Voodoo5 6000, die schnellste funktionsfähige Grafikkarte aus den Laboren des 3D-Pioniers, mausert sich zum Modding-Objekt Nummer 1. Das muss man sich auf der Zunge zergehen lassen: Nicht einmal 100 funktionsfähige Exemplare der "Göttin" befinden sich weltweit in den Händen von Fans – und einige davon wagen dennoch riskante Mods an den wertvollen Prototypen. Der Wert einer solchen Grafikkarte beziffert sich je nach Revision und Zustand auf 1.000 bis über 2.000 Euro.
Trevormacro, der französische Modder und 3dfx-Fan hinter dem Projekt Voodoo 5 6000 Gold Second Edition, arbeitet derzeit an einer Wasserkühlung für die 3dfx-Karte. Die Basis dafür bildet eine V5 6000 der Revision A-3700 mit 166 MHz Taktfrequenz (synchron für alle vier Grafikchips und die 4x 32 MiB SDR-SDRAM). Die erste Herausforderung besteht darin, den "Wärmeleitbeton" zu entfernen, welcher zwischen den vier Grafikprozessoren und den kleinen Luftkühlern aufgetragen wurde. Bei jeder GPU besteht das Risiko, den raren Prototypen zu zerstören, doch trevormacros Bilder demonstrieren Erfolg.
