Like most modern graphics cards the HD 5879 is equipped with a Direct Heat Exhaust solution: A radial fan blows the air through a tunnel that covers the heatsink - the hot air is exhausted from the PC case. The cover is made of plastic and is attached with screws which make it easy to remove. The two 6-pin power connectors are placed on the upper side of the board and don't make the card longer; the braze points indicate that an 8-pin connector is possible, too. On the rear end of the card the cover has two intake air ducts through which the fan can suck fresh air - very good for small cases or Crossfire setups.

Beneath the cover you have the cooler itself. A copper plate has direct contact with the GPU. The heat from the plate is transferred via four copper heatpipes to the aluminum fins. Another plate, which is made of aluminum, covers the GDDR5 memory and the voltage supply.

The "Cypress” is rotated by 45 degrees and is surrounded by eight Samsung GDDR 5 chips which are specified for 2,500 MHz. The power supply for the GPU is handled by four Volterra VT1157SFs - enough space for a fifth one is available. One Volterra VT1165MF is responsible for the GPU voltage - possibly the "cypress” will be overclockable with tools like Rivatuner soon.
