Windows 7: Old trick allows activation already
With RTM just being finished and not delivered to the stores, Microsoft Windows 7 is already available for download on diverse relevant websites - including software for avoiding activation.
A few days after Microsoft has finished RTM of Windows 7 the new OS can already be downloaded in internet file sharing services. Besides the ISO images there are programs available which avoid activation of the operating system. To simplify matters people can use the Vista functionality which is actually thought for OEM manufacturers.
For easier activation, OEM manufacturers and their customers can activate Windows via serial number, certificate and BIOS SLIC table. In case those three parameters fit together Windows 7 is activated without having to report to Redmond. Hackers obtain that serial number and the corresponding certificate and emulate the BIOS of such an OEM computer. This also works with the WGA program which is required with certain updates.
It remains to be seen if a Microsoft update will be able to stop hackers. Due to the used boot loader this will be a difficult task. Blocking the serial number would also cause blocking of thousands of legal Windows copies as well.
