Download: Testdisk & Photorec 6.10 - partitions and data restored
What can be done if a partition with important files is deleted by a virus or simple human failure? Testdisk & Photorec can be helpful.
First of all: If the hard drive itself is damaged, even Testdisk is useless. But the program can restore partitions, which were deleted or damaged by a virus or software failure. Fat and NTFS partitions are not a problem and even exotic formats like ext3 (Linux) or BeFS can be dealt with. If the system won't boot from the hard drive, Testdisk restores the partition chart and the boot sector.
The package also contains Photorec, which is optimized for recovering files (and doesn't stick to pictures as the name might suggest). It can deal with damaged or formatted partitions, too. If you want to recover files you deleted by mistake, you rather should take a look at other applications like Undelete Plus.
Testdisk and Photorec don't offer a graphical interface and thus the use is recommendable for experienced users only. Both programs run without an installation on windows and versions for DOS or Linux are available, too. The current Windows version 6.10 of the Open Source package can be downloaded from our servers - additional versions can be found at the official website.
