Thunderbird 3: Free email application ready for download
The Mozilla Foundation has released the email application Thunderbird 3. The new version can now be downloaded for free.
The final version of Thunderbird 3, a free email application developed by the Mozilla Foundation, has been released. Due to multiple improvements like tabs for using different emails at the same time, improved support for Google Mail and performance optimizations for IMAP mail accounts Thunderbird 3 is supposed to strengthen its position as one of the leading free email applications and to put Microsoft's Outlook under more pressure. The developers promise up to 100 changes and adjustments in Thunderbird 3, some of which are supposed to prepare for future versions of the program. Among the most interesting new features are the improved security tools, the introduction of the register navigation (Tabbed Email Messages) and a new Add-on manager. The full list of changes can be found on Mozilla's website.
Thunderbird 3: System requirements
In regards of processor and RAM Thunderbird 3 is still not very hungry - according to the developers at Mozilla a Pentium with 233 MHz or better is specified as minimum requirements, but 500 MHz and above are recommended. With older Windows versions like Windows 2000 or XP, 256 MiByte RAM are required while 512 MiByte are said to noticeably speed the system up. For windows Vista and windows 7 on the other hand at least 768 MiByte RAM are required and 1 GiByte is recommended. On the hard drive Thunderbird 3 needs about 52 megabyte of space.
You can download Thunderbird 3 for Windows, Linux or Mac OS from the Mozilla website. There are more than 45 fully localized versions of the email application available. For more information and already known problems, see the Release Notes.
