Dirt 2 CPU benchmarks with DirectX 9 and DirectX 11: Phenom doing well, quad-cores rule
Is Colin McRae: Dirt 2 scaling as good with multiple CPU cores and frequency as Race Driver Grid? PC games Hardware does the test and checks 13 processors in DirectX 9 and DirectX 11.
Colin McRae Dirt 2: Engine and graphics
Dirt 2 is based on Codemasters' own renderer, the Ego engine. The cross platform architecture is capable of all modern rendering tricks, some of which are delivered with DirectX 11. The current API offers Hardware Tessellation which is used for a more detailed audience, tessellated cloth (banners and flags) as well as a more realistic visualization of water with more waves and splashes. Due to the Full Floating Point HDR Illumination (FP16) and High Definition Ambient Occlusion calculated via DirectCompute, Post Effects like Motion blur and filtered Soft Shadows especially the light and shadow effects of Colin McRae: Dirt 2 are very realistic.
A selection of high quality screenshots (2560 x 1600, max details, DX11, 4x MSAA + 16:1 AF) from the Colin McRae Dirt 2 Demo - downsized to 1280 x 800 pixels can be found in our gallery. For GPU performance results, please take a look at our Dirt 2 benchmarks - DX 9 vs. DX 11.
Colin McRae Dirt 2: Benchmark sequence and results
The demo of Dirt 2 contains an integrated benchmark that shows a race with several opponents in Morocco on the track "Ounila Bergab” and runs with activated A.I. In order to minimize measurement fluctuations, we run each benchmark for each CPU at least three times and take the average fps values. The frames per second are tracked with the tool Fraps which we record the first 60 seconds of the sequence with.

In DirectX 9 mode the Radeon HD 5870 is fast enough not to slow most CPUs, thus there are big differences between the processors. Like Race Driver Grid, Dirt 2 massively benefits from more than two CPU cores: The Q6600 for example beats its dual-core sibling, the E6600, by 67 percent. A Q9650 is 62 percent faster than an E8400. Thus the Wolfdale processor is even beat by the Q6600 with about 30 percent. Dirt 2 also benefits from an upgrade from three to four cores. The Phenom II X4 925 is about 18 percent faster than the Phenom II X3 720 BE. AMD's Deneb CPUs are running well with the Ego Engine. The Phenom II X4 965 BE is almost as fast as the much more expensive Intel core i7-860. The latter one receives a minimal benefit from SMT.
Colin McRae: Dirt 2 - Conclusion
Colin McRae: Dirt 2 is scaling excellent with higher frequencies and additional cores. Independent from the selected rendering path a modern dual-core CPU with about 3.0 GHz or a triple- respectively quad-core with a lower frequency is able to deliver smooth gameplay. In most systems, especially with DirectX 11, the graphics card is the limiting factor.
