The most beautiful textures in games (part 2 with big update)
Once they were crude patterns but evolved in near photorealistic surfaces: Textures, the wallpaper of 3D graphics. Below we crown the kings of texture quality and introduce some modifications.
The first games using polygons in the beginning of the 90s didn't use any textures at all. Single colored and dull surfaces covered the angular objects. Later the objects had detailed but still blocky and unfiltered surfaces. 3dfx' Voodoo Graphics set a milestone with bilinear filtering for the first time. Since then the resolutions of the wallpapers have risen from 64x64 (Tomb Raider) up to 4,096x4,096 (Crysis) Texel.
The present: The best textures
Multi texturing had been on the peak of its success some years ago. Max Payne 2 (2003) and Unreal Tournament 2004 (dt.) didn't use pixel shading but textures with high resolutions. Current games rely on shader technology in order to make low resolution textures better looking, e.g. UT3 (dt.). But here sometimes the shaders aren't fully functional since they cannot conceal everything and often flicker a lot. Developer Crytek works much better: Current top-notch Crysis combines the best of both solutions and achieves the most realistic appearance up to now.
In comparison to our original article The most beautiful textures in games we have extended our picture gallery with current games which partly gain even more quality by using texture modifications. Included are games such as Drakensang, Sacred 2, Crysis Warhead, Stalker Clear Sky, Fallout 3, GTA 4 and FEAR 2.
New for old: Texture mods
Especially old 3D games offer possibilities to improve textures. For most of them there are community based face-liftings available. In our image gallery you will find pictures of some of the most astonishing texturemods. Among them are: Tomb Raider, Jedi Knight, Half-Life (dt.), System Shock 2, Unreal, Deus Ex, Gothic, Gothic 2, Doom 3, Quake 4 (dt.), TES 4: Oblivion, Stalker, Half-Life 2 (dt.).
