11 years of Unreal Engine: The most popular games
Today the Unreal Engine developed by Epic Games celebrates its 11th birthday. Therefore PC Games Hardware presents a picture gallery with many popular games which are based on the different engine versions.
Exact eleven years ago the first Unreal Engine game was released. Interestingly it was called Unreal 1 and was published by Epic Games and GT Interactive on May 22, 1998.
Since then Epic has changed its focus from game to engine development more and more. This change has called many critics into action because the Unreal Engine has not been a niche product for a long time now but rather a mass product seeing the huge number of game releases. Looking at the list of popular Unreal Engine games on Wikipedia titles such as Bioshock, Deus Ex and Mass Effect attract attention. However there are many games listed which could not satisfy the gamers despite its prominent license.
The current Unreal Engine 3 is a multi-platform engine which supports DirectX 9 and DirectX 10. PC Games Hardware has rummaged through its archives for collecting the probably most interesting Unreal Engine games that have been released up to know. This compilation certainly is subjective and not exhaustive as well.
Do you miss a game? Then do not hesitate to tell us in the commentaries. But please be aware that some of the popular Unreal Engine games are missing due to legal grounds.
