Snow and ice in games - a walk around wintery pixel worlds
Winter is nearing its end - we didn't have much snow this year. People who wanted to see some wonderful snowscapes had to travel quite far or had to install an adequate game. PC Games Hardware takes a look at the graphics quality.
In games snow and ice are as important as water, fire and vegetation. You can find snow themes in almost every genre - from sports games, real time strategy up to graphical highlights such as Crysis.
For developers the presentation of snow is as difficult as it is to visualize water. An enormous programming effort is necessary in order to have snow that looks real. Furthermore a powerful hardware for the complex operations is needed. However, we are still far away from a dynamic presentation of the aggregate state of water. When there is snow in games it mostly stays snow. Cars do not turn it into snow slush and warmer temperatures do not melt it. You see: A realistic presentation of snow is still a dream of the future.
Nevertheless we took a look through many computer and video games of the last years and present some of the winter wonderlands in our picture gallery. In case we missed out an important scene please let us know and send us a picture of it.
