Exclusive interview about Cryostasis
We interviewed Alexey Tugaenko, lead programmer of Cryostasis: Sleep of Reason, about the action game of developer Action Forms via E-mail.
PCGH: Have you developed the Atmosfear 2.0-Engine from scratch or is there any technology you imported from the engine of your previous game?
Alexey Tugaenko: Development was carried out practically from the beginning. From the previous version of the engine we have decided to leave basic instruments of development, and system of scripts which we significantly updated.
PCGH: What is the advantage when developing with your own technology? In other words, why do you decide not to use middleware?
Alexey Tugaenko: We use intermediate SW (middleware), for example: Ageia (nVidia) PhysX, AudioEngine (FMod).
PCGH: Will your game be adapted for next gen consoles? If yes, how will they differ as far as visual and technical aspect is concerned? Will there be PC version priority? What technical features cannot be realized on consoles (PS3, Xbox 360)?
Alexey Tugaenko: PC version will be our priority. Xbox 360 might be a possibility, but currently the game is PC only. If the game becomes multi-platform graphically we shall try to preserve the atmosphere of game, though probably visually some effects will not be presented, but only those which will be technically too hard or impossible to implement on a console (because of technical limitations consoles have).
PCGH: Some developers recently stated that they won't develop their games for the PC because the PC and its rapidly changing hardware is not powerful enough as well as piracy makes the development for PC as a platform less profitable. How do you think about such statements? Does the PC as a gaming Platform really pale and strongly loose attraction for developers in comparison to the consoles?
Alexey Tugaenko: PC hardware develops really quickly, however I would not say that it is less powerful than on consoles. Things are changing fast. Certainly consoles too do not stand still and are catching up with PC. Moreover the customers focus is also moving towards consoles. According to the latest tendencies all the major companies tend to have at least one console title.
