PCGH Special: Important games of the role-playing genre (From 2001 to 2005)
In this part of our RPG special series we present some of the most important games in the genre - both technology and content were taken into consideration. Today we have some popular titles like Star Wars Galaxies, The Elder Scrolls but also World of Warcraft.
Quite naturally the question arises: What really is a roll-playing game? In shooter games you often have to decide which weapon you want to take along - so do they matter? For this article series we stick to a more conservative definition: Multiple possibilities to solve a problem (choices and consequences), focus on character development and a good storyline with optional quests are the features we are looking for - no matter whether if you have a single hero or a whole party. The fascinating Asia role-playing games of the Final Fantasy series and similar games will get their own article later on. Hybrids like the "Quest” -series (Hero's Quest, Space Quest, Quest for Glory) count as adventures in our opinion.
If you have any suggestions which game should be integrated into this series, don't hesitate to tell us in the comments and write a plausible explanation.
