The biggest hardware devourers of their times (part 2 with 44 pictures)
Almost every year a game is released that gets any PC to its knees and forces ambitioned gamers to upgrade their system. PCGH introduces the games that match this description.
Everyone knows a situation like this: You think your PC will be able to handle all the games for some months or even years. But right then a game is released that you have been anxiously waiting for - and it brings your system to its knees. If overclocking or individual upgrades cannot help, you need a new PC.
In the history of PC games there have been several extraordinary titles, because of which people upgraded their system to be able to play them. PCGH tries to list those games that earned the title "hardware devourer”. Of course we aren’t omniscient and therefore we forgot some of the games that should be part of the gallery. In the second revision of this article we took the feedback of the community into account and overhauled the assembly.
Generally one has to bear in mind that many 2D game series have generally overstrained most PCs when they were transferred to 3D. A good example is The Settlers 2: the Next Generation which, in contrast to the original, wasn’t running very smooth on weaker systems.
Our list has been purged, controversial games have been removed and we added new games. It doesn't matter if the game was poorly programmed or just way ahead of its time. Often you can’t really say why a game is running as bad as it is. Just take a look at the caption of the pictures.
Have fun with the 44 games in the gallery.
