Namco Bandai bought the European Atari subsidiary and now wants to use the brand name.
Atari brand name to vanish from Europe
Atari is history - once again. The traditional brand name won't be used in Europe any longer. In September 2008 Infogrames, the holding company of Atari, sold big parts of the European subsidiary to Namco Bandai. The new owners now have their own plans and use the Atari brand name for their own games in Japan. Australia and Asia are also affected. Only the US subsidiary will be continued.
But Atari USA won't act as a classical game publisher anymore. It is planned to increase the effort in the online sector. Games that are published by Atari in Europe will be handled by the rebranded Distribution Partners. The first example should be Ghostbusters: The Video Game.
