PCGH Special: The evolution of cars in PC games
Racing without remorse - that's what games are for. PC Games Hardware takes a closer look at the evolution of vehicles in video games. There are more than 80 pictures in our gallery, showing some of the most interesting examples.
The genre of racing games is one of the oldest parts of digital entertainment. You can speed along without having to think about traffic rules, your wallet or your personal health. One owns abilities can be easily measured on time tracks and multiplayer sessions tend to become epic battles. So it is not a miracle that racing games are still highly treasured today.
Almost equally interesting to driving through the digital world is the evolution of the games themselves. Techniques and content changed over the years. The available hardware always limited the technical development. Graphics became more pretty and realistic. Due to new possibilities, like physics calculation, new features were introduced. The vehicles got a damage model and behaved physically correct. Environmental influences like rain, reflections of sun light and a realistic handling are fundamental features today.
The vehicles are the focus of attention in racing games. For example the Colin McRae Rally series, named after the late World Rally Champion, always feature good looking and very detailed cars since it was created. Other titles in our gallery aren't less famous: DTM Race Driver, Gran Turismo, Project Gotham Racing and the classic Papyrus.
PC Games Hardware presents 81 pictures from 29 years of racing games.
