Serious Sam HD: The First Encounter - Maxed out graphics
Serious Sam HD, the remake of the popular shooter, has been released. PC Games Hardware made a brief test with the Steam version and delivers a graphics comparison plus maxed put screenshots.
Serious Sam HD is available on Steam while the retail version will hit stores in December. To get an impression of the shooter we installed a Steam version and took some screenshots for you. If you would like to see a more detailed article about Serious Sam HD, tell us in the comments.
It is striking that the main menu of Serious Sam HD promises more than the in-game graphics of our version delivers. While in the menu you can see Depth of Field and Blooming, those effects aren't around in the game itself. Besides that the textures are very detailed to some extend and offer Bump Mapping (veteran gamers might be remembered of the S3TC textures of the Unreal engine demo level). But weapons, monsters and lighting sometimes look quite aged, regardless of the Serious Engine 3. It is also strange that in the gameplay videos which have been released up to now, don't show Depth of Field, while on some screenshots on the official website the feature is clearly visible. Perhaps this phenomenon will be solved soon.
The screenshots in our gallery below have been taken at a resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels with 4x Supersampling and maximal settings. Our Radeon HD 5870 and Core i7 processor were able to keep the framerate above 40 fps all the time. So Serious Sam HD isn't too challenging for the hardware. We also assembled a comparison between Low, Medium and Ultra graphics settings.
