PCGH Retro: The Case of John Romero
Once again PCGH takes a look at the short but eventful history of the computer. Today: What happened on August 8?
...1996: He is a living legend - among game designers at least: John Romero. His career began at Softdisk, where he got Tom Hall and John Carmack on board. Later on they founded id Software - and became one of the most renowned developers of all time. He and his company got famous for the shooters of the Doom and Quake series. But on August 8 the "Dreamteam” of technical genius Carmack and the creative designer Romero splits up - due to internal differences the latter one leaves the company and founds his own studio. At first it is called "Dream Design” and the development of a shooter, based on the Quake technology of course, is the first task at hand. Dream Design is renamed to Ion Storm, the project is called Daikatana - and becomes a disaster.
...2005: Ati releases the graphics chip R423 as Radeon X800 GT. At that time it is a quite powerful chip of the upper middle-class. It especially competes against Nvidia's Geforce 6600 GT.
