Red Faction: Guerrilla (PC) - Hands-on with quality comparison, screenshots and system requirements
Red Faction: Guerrilla finally hits the PC and brings a lot of destruction into the action genre. PC Games Hardware has screenshots and a quality comparison.
The third part of the Red faction series takes place on the Mars and confronts the player with new challenges. Besides the "common" weapons, like rifles or explosives, the Sledgehammer will be one of the most important tools since it can be used to smash most objects you can encounter. But Red Faction: Guerrilla doesn't impress with the destructible environment alone. The action game offers physics simulations that are realized with a modified Havok Engine. Since Red Faction: Guerrilla has been available for the consoles it only had to be ported to the PC - but the developers at Volition upgraded the renderer which now supports DirectX 10.
The official Red Faction: Guerrilla system requirements
Minimal system requirements:
• OS: Windows Vista / XP
• CPU 2.0 GHz dual-core processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2)
• RAM: 1 GiByte
•GPU: 128 MiByte VRAM, Shader Model 3.0 (e.g. Nvidia Geforce 7600 or Radeon X1300)
Recommended system requirements
• OS: Windows Vista (DirectX 10)
• CPU 3.2 GHz dual-core processor (Intel Core 2 Duo or Athlon X2)
• RAM: 2 GiByte
•GPU: 256 MiByte VRAM, Shader Model 3.0 (e.g. Nvidia Geforce 8800 or Radeon HD 3850)
The picture comparison below demonstrates the difference in quality between minimal details without Anti-Aliasing and maximal details with 8x Anti-Aliasing.
The Windows Task Manager reveals that the final retail version of Red Faction: Guerrilla makes use of multi-core processors: While the usage is at about 50 percent when you are walking around, it is increased noticeably in situations with a lot of physics simulations. The peaks in the picture below represent collapsing buildings - at the same time the framerate is lowered, too.
The fps chart (different scene than CPU usage) reveals it: As soon as a building collapses the number of pictures per second is lowered. When we weren't smashing buildings, Red Faction: Guerrilla runs at 35 to 40 frames per second on combination of Geforce GTX 285 and Intel Core 2 Quad Q9550.
