Intel: USB 3.0 specifications released
To speed up the introduction of the new USB 3.0 Intel decided to develop their own host controller. As promised, they now published the specifications.
The so called Extensible Host Controller Interface (xHCI) momentarily exists in version 0.9 and delivers a standardized method for USB 3.0 host controller to communicate with the USB 3.0 software stack. The specifications explain the register and data structures used for connecting hardware and software in detail.
Each member of the USB 3.0 Promoter Group can acquire a free license as long as an “xHCI contributor agreement” is signed. Intel is already planning the release of version 0.95 in the fourth quarter, which is said to be available via a free license, too.
The release of Intel’s xHCI specification is an important step for the distribution of the USB 3.0 standard. It ensures the compatibility between devices of different producers and makes it easier to develop appropriate software.
