AMD sells mobile GPU assets to Qualcomm
The two companies announced that Qualcomm acquired graphics and multimedia assets from AMD.
In 2006 AMD took over Ati and thus the section of mobile graphics chips which are used in mobile devices like handhelds, smartphones or navigation systems. This section that develops the Ati Imageon GPUs was now sold to Qualcomm. Qualcomm is already using the Imageon cores as Intellectual Property cores together with ARM processors for system-on-a-chip (SoC).
For the takeover Qualcomm pays about $65 million to AMD, but a part of the amount is held back for employee related expenses. Authorities are said to have approved the transaction already. With the new setup Qualcomm could now use the Imageon chips to enter direct competition with the PowerVR chips which are used for example in Apple's Iphone or Intel's Atom chipset US15W. With Snapdragon Qualcomm already offers own SoCs for netbooks.
