TSMC invests 590 million US-Dollars in 40 nm process
The Taiwanese contract manufacturer TSMC invests about 590 million US-Dollars in new equipment for the production of 40 nanometer GPUs.
The growing demand for 40 nm GPUs affects the contract manufacturer TSMC (Taiwanese Semiconductor Manufacturing Company). The company invested 20 billion Taiwan dollars (590 million US Dollars) in the 40 nanometer process and buys new equipment that is installed in the 12 inch fab (300 mm).
Especially in the second half of the year the production of 40 nanometer GPUs is expected to increase noticeably since AMD's 40 nm GPU is ready to go and Nvidia's answer won't be far behind - both companies are customers of TSMC.
In addition to the new acquisitions on the equipment side, TSMC also is on schedule in regards of hiring specialized staff, says digitimes. Apparently the company wants to employ several hundreds of new engineers.
