Nvidia CUDA enhanced quality of moon landing footage - video and picture comparison
Video material of the moon landing has been brought to a new level of quality with Nvidia CUDA and the Tesla cards.
It seems like more and more manufacturers, developers, scientists and movie makers make use of GPU Computing.
The company Lowry Digital, which is specialized on enhancing video material, has now used Nvidia's CUDA technology to bring the original TV footage of the Apollo moon landing to HD quality. The work was done by Tesla card which have been designed for such special tasks. Although Nvidia's calculation devices look like ordinary graphics card, they aren't intended for video output.
Due to a special image editing algorithm the quality of the material was increased significantly. Below we have arranged some direct comparisons with pictures and videos that show the differences between the original footage and the restored material.
According to Nvidia such an optimization would need between 25 and 45 minutes per frame on a CPU based system. With Tesla and CUDA a hundredfold acceleration would be possible.
