Cougar CM Power 700 Review: New PSU series tested
With the Cougar CM Power 700 a new power supply unit enters the market. PC Games Hardware checks if the PSU can really put its good technical specifications into action.
Up to now HEC/Compucase was commonly known as an OEM manufacturer, but now the new label Cougar is supposed to establish itself on the retail market. PC Games Hardware reviews the CM Power 700, one of the first power supply units from the new Cougar PSU series.
Cougar CM Power 700: Features
On first sight the Cougar CM Power 700 catches the eye with its bright orange color. Instead of cryptic description cougar rather uses clear names: The CM in Cougar CM Power 700 for example stands for Cable Management. The modular cables make it easier to keep the case clean and offer six PATA and six SATA power connectors. Furthermore there are two 6-pin and two 8-pin PCI Express power connectors. The two 12 Volt rails deliver 30 Ampere each. So the Cougar PSU is able to power setups of two graphics cards like the Geforce GTX 260.
Cougar CM Power 700: Performance
With 32 degrees Celsius the temperature controlled 140 millimeter fan of the CM Power reaches quite good (low) temperatures. At the same time it stays quiet at 0.5 Sone (50 cm distance) in idle mode and reaches 1.8 Sone on full workload. Our test system (Intel Core i7 920, Radeon HD 4870 X2) was absolute stable at full workload (Prime 95 with eight threads and Furmark in Extreme Burning mode) and pulled 643 watt from the power socket. 208 watt on idle are average, too.
Cougar CM Power 700: Conclusion
As an OEM manufacturer HEC/Compucase has first-hand experience with power supply units and consequently uses this knowledge for the Cougar retail series. The performance data we recorded is first-class: The CM Power 700 is working quiet and stable. Given those results the expected end customer price of about 120 Euros (manufacturer information) is justified. The cougar CM Power 700 is supposed to become available in late May.
