IDF 2009: Mini-ITX motherboard for Clarkdale CPUs
Besides the first 32 nanometer processors of the Clarkdale family Intel also showed an appropriate motherboard with the Mini-ITX form factor with a socket 1156 and P55 chipset.
Clarkdale CPUs are quite suitable for Mini-ITX motherboards since the P55 chip is a single-chip design and this safes some space - which a P45 for example would need for north- and southbridge. Furthermore the processors have an integrated graphics unit what makes an extensive cooling solution for the P55 chip unnecessary.
At the IDF PC Games Hardware had the chance to take some pictures of a Mini-ITX motherboard with a socket 1156 and a P55 chip for Clarkdale CPUs. In contrast to other P55 boards that have been shown up to now, this device is able to use the integrated graphics unit of the Clarkdale processor. Displays can be connected via HDMI or Sub-D. The I/O panel also offers LAN, E-SATA, six USB ports and a digital sound output (optical). Thus the board is definitely suitable for compact HTPCs.
The free space that is gained from the single-chip-design of the P55 is used to integrate a PCI Express x16 slot as well as ordinary DDR2 memory slots. Other Mini-ITX boards often can be equipped with small SO-DIMMs only which are usually used for notebooks. Furthermore there are four SATA ports and a slot for Flash modules onboard.
We expect that the mini-ITX motherboard for the Clarkdales will become available in Q1 2010 together with the processors. Prices have not been announced yet.
