Asus Gene: microATX high-end motherboard
The Rampage II Gene from Asus is the first of the Gene motherboards which are intended for case modders, overclockers and LAN party fans.
Like the Rampage II Extreme, the Rampage II Gene supports SLI and Crossfire, but offers only two instead of three PCI-E 2.0 x16 slots. Furthermore one PCI-E 2.0 x4 and one PCI slot are available. Compared to the Rampage II Extreme the Gene is missing a second gigabit LAN port, a discrete sound card and a coaxial output. The PCB of the Rampage II Gene has six layers.
Asus puts the full version of Futuremark's 3DMark 06 into the box of the X58 based Rampage II Gene. The "MemOK!” feature is new and is supposed to ensure stable operation even with memory modules of lower quality.
Besides the Asus Rampage II Gene, more motherboards in the microATX format are planned. Asus thinks about the Maximus II Gene with P45 chipset and the Crosshair II Gene for Phenom II CPUs with an Nvidia 980a SLI chipset.
