New, fast SSDs by Super Talent and OCZ
OCZ and Super Talent, both manufacturers of DRAM and Flash memory products, have expanded their portfolio of 2.5'' SSDs.
Super Talent presented two different product lines. The models of the Ultradrive LE series are available with storage capacities of 32 Gigabyte, 64 Gigabyte and 128 Gigabyte. According to the manufacturer they are supposed to reach a read speed of 230 Megabyte per second and a write speed of 170 Megabyte per second due to SLC technology. The hard drives of the MLC based Ultradrive ME family are marginally slower with a read speed of 200 Megabyte per second and a write speed of 160 Megabyte. Instead there will be a model with 256 Gigabyte memory.
Super Talent's Ultradrive SSDs should be available from January 2009. The press release says nothing about the pricing.
Super Talent's offer is rather made for server and data processing centers of major enterprises. OCZ however addresses their SSDs of the new Vertex series to the end customer since they focus on the lower priced MLC technology. Nevertheless the 30 Gigabyte (129 USD), 60 Gigabyte (249 USD), 120 Gigabyte (469 USD) and 250 Gigabyte (869 USD) hard drives are supposed to have a read speed of 200 Megabyte and a write speed of 160 Megabyte. An additional cache of 32 Megabyte should support the 30 Gigabyte and the 60 Gigabyte versions and 64 Megabyte cache support the 120 and 250 Gigabyte versions.
OCZ states a life expectancy of 1.5 million hours for the Vertex SSDs and a power consumption of 2 Watt during operation and 0.5 Watt during stand by. Warranty is granted for two years.
