CES: New Blu-ray disc with 33.4 gigabyte capacity
After Blu-ray has finally established itself and since the players are getting more and more affordable, Sony and Panasonic want to introduce a new standard that increases the capacity of the discs.
At the CES the two Japanese electronics manufacturers Sony and Panasonic want to introduce a new standard for the Blu-ray disc. With the new revision the maximal capacity is supposed to be increased from 25 to 33.4 gigabyte. Thus the capacity on double layered discs grows from 50 to 66.4 gigabyte. This development is possible due to Maximum Likelihood Sequence Estimation (i-MLSE) which is supposed to improve the optical operations during read and write. The positive aspect for customers is that the new standard is also compatible to old players. Sony and Panasonic now want to give the new technology to the BDA (Blu-ray Disc Association) to make it a new standard.
