Toshiba announces 240 GByte for 1.8 inch hard drives
The development of hard drives is making good progress although SSDs get more popular every day. Now Toshiba was able to squeeze 240 GByte into a 1.8 inch hard drive.
The capacity of the MK2431GAH is reached with two platters. They are turning with 4,200 rpm - the previous model with 160 GB reached 3,600 rpm). With this improvement the new drive has an access time of 15 milliseconds and can use additional eight MiByte buffer.
The dimensions appear almost tiny: 54 x 71 x 8 millimeters. The data density is 344 GiByte per square inch. The drive weights only 59 grams and needs 33 percent less energy than its predecessor.
Toshiba delivers two additional models with less capacity for the series. The MK8031GAL (80 GByte) and the MK1231GAL (120 GByte) are equipped with a single platter only and their maximal height is only five millimeters. With this series Toshiba aims for the UMPC market in the first place. Currently there are no prices, but the mass production will start in September.
