Thunderbird 3 Beta 1: First prerelease version of the email client
Thunderbird is currently limping a little behind Firefox in matter of development. Now the first version of the email client has been release.
Besides performance benefit for communication with IMAP servers there mainly are usability improvements. So for example there will be a new feature called "Tabbed Email” that allows you to open mails, folders, contacts and other basic functions in different tabs.
The display of emails while reading them is improved, too. The control elements have been placed closer to the text in order to make access to important actions like forwarding or answering easier.
Contacts and the integration into Windows Vista (Thunderbird emails are now covered by the Windows Search) have also been enhanced.
The developers point out that the Beta 1 is unfinished software that can still contain severe bugs. Thus Thunderbird 3 should not be used productive systems.
You can download the Beta in several languages and for multiple operating systems from the Mozilla Messaging site.
