Ati Eyefinity: Playing NFS Shift, WoW and Half-Life 2 easily in 5,120 x 1,600 - Update with new games
The combination of Ati's forthcoming DirectX 11 Radeons and the Eyefinity technology makes extreme high resolutions and setups with up to 24 displays possible.
With Ati's Eyefinity Technology Quad CrossfireX setups with future Radeon graphics cards can be connected to up to 24 displays. Thereby six displays are connected to a single graphics card via DisplayPorts - unfortunately this is only possible with a special version of AMD's new Radeons since the normal variant only has one DisplayPort as well as two DVI and one HDMI connector. It is nevertheless quite impressive what the Eyefinity technology is capable of if one uses 30 inch displays with a native resolution of 2560 x 1600 pixels.
Since here at PC Games Hardware we currently have only 30 inch monitors that don't have a DisplayPort, we unfortunately can offer screenshots that have a resolution of 5120 x 1600 pixels "only” and not 7680 x 1600. But as soon as we receive a display with the appropriate connector we will get to that resolution, too. More detailed information about the (graphics) hardware we used for our Eyefinity setup cannot be published at the moment - but the answer to this question is obligatory.
Some of the first impressions we took with the Eyefinity technology can be found in our preview gallery (pictures are downsized). At the end of the article you can download some of the screenshots in their full resolution.
Update September 29, 2009:
Last weekend PC Games Hardware took a look at Eyefinity and three 24 inch Dell displays. In minimized form we present the results in our gallery. In case you are interested in the high-res screenshots in 3,600 x 1,920 and 5,760 x 1,200 pixels you can download the zip file at the end of this article. For next week we expect three 30 inch displays and even bigger screenshots will be possible.
By the way neither of the games caused any problems with Eyefinity. Anno 1404, Race Driver Grid, Crysis or Guild Wars: All run perfectly. Only Fallout 3 caused some trouble solely because the graphics card didn't have enough VRAM.
