Review Geforce GTX 690: World's fastest graphics card
Nvidia's Geforce GTX 690 reviewed by PC Games Hardware: The new flagship GTX 690 brings together two GPUs on a single board. Our review answers the question whether the GTX 690 will destroy the competition or not-
The GTX 690 is a costly graphics card with a 1000 USD investment. The GK 104 Kepler duo is packed onto a PCB with 28,1 centimeter and 1.027 gramm. The dual slot solution features 3072 CUDA cores (2 times GK104) whereas the base clock is slightly below the single GPU GTX 680 (915 versus 1105 MHz). The Boost Clock is around 1019 MHz. 2048 MiB GDDR5 per GPU, 192 GB/s bandwidth and a TDP of 300 Watts are additional specs.
Some of the benchmarks used in the GTX 690 Review at PCGH.de:
• Battlefield 3 (DX11, Origin)
• BF Bad Company 2 (DX11, Origin)
• Crysis Warhead v1.21 (DX10)
• Crysis 2 v1.9 (DX11 + Hi-Res)
• Dirt 3 v1.2 (DX11)
• Dragon Age 2 v1.04 (DX11)
• Mass Effect 2 v1.02 (DX9)
• Metro 2033 (DX11, Steam)
• Serious Sam 3 BFE (DX9, Steam)
• Starcraft 2 v1.4.3 (DX9)
Nvidia's GeForce GTX 690 is the best multi-GPU card at the PCGH test labs so far. In our gaming index, the GTX 690 is up to 70 percent faster than the GTX 680 - at least in 2,560 x 1,600. At lower resolutions, the main processor limits the possible scaling ability. The target audience for GTX 690 is clearly defined: enthusiasts who are not satisfied with full HD resolution or multi-sample anti-aliasing.
Power consumption and loudness are well done for a dual-GPU solution. Noteworthy is that Nvidia has worked succesfully on micro stuttering: While the solution is not perfect, the distribution of frames is in many cases closer to single-GPU graphics cards than other dual solutions. But there is room for improvement: The GTX 690 produces micro stuttering, especially if the frame rate is in the 30 fps range. Nevertheless, the Geforce GTX 690 is the overall best dual-GPU graphics card since the 3dfx Voodoo 5 5500.
