GTA 4 (PC): Geforce 180.84 Beta accelerates the game only slightly
Nvidia recommends the current beta version 180.84 of the Geforce driver for the PC version of GTA 4. PC Games Hardware tests if Grand Theft Auto 4 runs faster with this piece of software.
Geforce 180.84 Beta: Introduction
"NVIDIA recommends that you update your system with the following GeForce v180.84 driver for the best experience on Grand Theft Auto IV”. This can be read in the download section of Nvidia's Nzone. Since our gaming experience has been rather slow up to now, we installed the Geforce beta and checked the performance.
Geforce 180.84 Beta: Test sequence
Given the results of our GTA 4 CPU benchmark review, GTA 4 is primarily challenging for the processor. Thus we chose to use the maximal available graphics settings and a resolution of 2,560 x 1,600 for this short review. Furthermore we ran our benchmark at night time in the game: Due to multiple car headlights and street lanterns all characters cast dynamic shadows that add to the stress for the graphics card. In order to prevent measurement irregularities because of a differing number of cars, we ran each benchmark four times.
Geforce 180.84 Beta: Conclusion
The Geforce 180.84 Beta accelerates GTA 4 by about 4 percent at with very high settings at least. But in 1,680 x 1,050 already the CPU is the limiting factor - both drivers deliver results with differences that lie within measuring inaccuracy. Furthermore the 180.84 Beta doesn't solve the problems of GTA 4 - it seems like the Patch promised by Rockstar will have to do this. The same applies to the problems of the Radeon cards. The recently released Catalyst 8.12 didn't remove the Radeon startup problems on our test systems.
