Catalyst 8.5 in Hands-On review
Nearly every month AMD delivers a new Catalyst driver. This year the latest one is number five and accordingly is named 8.5.
As usual the question arises, if the new driver is boosting the performance and/or is adding new features. The latter is obviously not the case. But the question, what changes to the fps were made, is very interesting. Please bear in mind, that PCGH checked the prerelease version not the final one.
We used a Core 2 Quad Q6600 overclocked to 3 GHz, 2 GiB DDR2-800 RAM and a Radeon HD 3870. As our operating system we chose the x86 version of Windows XP with SP2. The catalyst 8.5 had to show its capabilities in four games and was compared to the two predecessors. We set the resolution to 1,280x1,024 and activated 4x Anti-Aliasing and 16x anisotropic Filtering - we didn't use those enhanced quality options in Crysis.
