Catalyst 8.12 WHQL accelerates Call of Duty 5, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 and Left 4 Dead
AMD's Catalyst 8.12 WHQL delivers, especially in recent games like Call of Duty: World at War, Fallout 3, Far Cry 2 or Left 4 Dead, a performance benefit. With a Radeon HD 4870 we tested how much the driver update accelerates the games.
Catalyst 8.12 WHQL accelerates current games: Introduction
In our Catalyst 8.12 WHQL review the driver only delivered minimal performance differences in the games we usually use for our benchmarks. But since the games are not the latest actually, the results don't give a hint on the possibly performance of newer games. Currently Nvidia cards are faster in up-to-date games like Far Cry 2, Call of Duty 5 and Left for Dead, as it can be seen in our OC card performance review. In Fallout 3 both competitors are equally fast. Therefore we decided to test the Radeon performance in those games with the new driver.
Catalyst 8.12 WHQL accelerates current games: Conclusion
The Catalyst 8.12 WHQL increases the performance of the Radeon HD 4870 1,024 MiByte in Call of Duty World at War and Fallout 3 by about 5 percent. Far Cry 2 is about 7 percent faster and Left for Dead the Catalyst 8.12 delivers a 10 percent benefit. Similar, although smaller, benefits are gained for Nvidia cards with the Geforce 180.48 WHQL.
At the moment we are checking if the performance benefits are received at the expense of the visual quality. Furthermore we are testing nine games at three settings to reveal how the all-time competitors Radeon HD 4870 1.024 and Geforce GTX 260-216 as well as the HD 4850 512 and the Geforce 9800 GTX+ are performing with new drivers.
