AMD Radeon HD 4890: First pictures and technical details - Update: More Benchmarks
The reports about the Radeon HD 4890 are getting more precise and the first pictures and technical pictures were published on a Chinese website.
It seems like the Radeon HD 4890 is going to be released soon. The first pictures of the AMD card became available and the technical specifications given don't differ much anymore.
Currently one can expect the Radeon HD 4890 to have a GPU frequency of 850 MHz. This clock speed has been mentioned several times and appears to be realistic. Thus the HD 4890 is running 100 MHz faster than the HD 4870. The chip is said to be called RV790 and apparently it runs at 275 MHz only when in idle mode. 1,024 MiByte GDDR5 VRAM running at 975 MHz and linked via a 256 Bit interface is supposed to be the default memory size for the HD 4890.
Furthermore the Radeon HD 4890 will offer the common support for CrossfireX and DirectX 10.1. According to the pictures there haven't been a lot of changes made to the cooling solution. Power is supplied via two 6-pin connectors. The braze points for a combination with one 6-pin and one 8-pin power connector are available on the PCB.
The fortunetellers estimate that the card will officially be released on April 6 or April 8. The prices are currently varying between 240 and 260 Euros. Several online retailers launched product websites, some of which already have been taken offline again, for Radeon HD 4890 cards from Sapphire and Powercolor.
Update on March 18: The website ocheaven.com published the first benchmarks with the Radeon HD 4890. It seems like the already mentioned clock speeds are confirmed. In 3DMark 06 the Radeon HD 4890 reached 10,996 points. The performance advantage compared to the HD 4870 is said to be quite good and the overall performance is supposed to be around the GTX 285. In 3DMark Vantage things don't look as good though since the AMD GPU doesn't support Physx.
Update on March 19: Additional benchmarks which were published on the Ukrainian website overclockers.com.ua have been added to our picture gallery. The HD 4890 is competing with the HD 4870 and several Geforce cards in 3DMark 06. In Crossfire setup the AMD card is placed first in the ranking.
