Globalfoundries announced GPU production in 32 and 28 nanometers
The founding of the Globalfoundries, previously AMD's production, took place only a month ago. Now the new contract manufacturer has announced 32 and 28 nanometer production.
The semiconductor producer Globalfoundries announced a rather aggressive schedule for 2009 and 2010. Graphics chips with a 32 nanometer structure are said to be offered in 2009 (production is already running in Dresden, Germany) and the next Die shrink to 28 nanometers won't take long.
Globalfoundries' Thomas Sonderman said in an interview with X-Bit labs that the company set clear targets and wants to offer the latest technology to its customers (and not only AMD since actually contracts from everyone can be accepted). Sonderman mentioned companies like Microsoft, Qualcomm and even Nvidia as possible customers. Globalfoundries is, as already mentioned, a contract manufacturer so patent infringements or the transfer of know-how should be a problem.
Furthermore markets besides the PC sector, like consoles, mobile devices or telecommunication, are said to be targeted, too.
