Nvidia: Geforce GTX 275 to be placed against Ati Radeon HD 4890? - New details
The Cebit just closed its gates and already there are rumors about a Geforce GTX 275 which is said to be introduced as a competitor to the Radeon HD 4890.
According to a report at VR-Zone Nvidia just informed their graphics card partners that there will be a product placed against the Radeon HD 4890. The Geforce GTX 275 is said to cost between 229 and 279 US Dollar. VR-Zone estimates that the card could possibly have 216 Shader ALUs and a 512 Bit interface or 240 ALUs and 448 Bit memory link. Thus the GTX 275 would be a mixture of the GTX 280/285 and the GTX 260-216.
Until now Nvidia did not comment on the rumors.
Update: March 13, 2009
Fudzilla reports that the Geforce GTX 275 will be similar to the Geforce GTX 295 but won't have a dual chip design. The 55 nanometer GT200b that is used is supposed to have 240 Shader ALUs and will reach 80 texture operations per clock. The number of ROPs is 28 (GTX 280 has 32 ROPs). The memory is connected with an 448 Bit interface resulting in expected VRAM configurations of 896 or 1,782 MiByte.
In our opinion a higher clock speed compared to the GTX 260 would make better sense since the card would receive a bigger benefit from that than from additional functional units.
Update March 30, 2009:
Expreview reports that Nvidia is supposed to have rescheduled the launch of the GTX 275 to April 2nd. Rumors also say that this is the planned release date for the Radeon HD 4890. The first online shops list the Geforce GTX 275 for about 250 Euros and similar prices have to be paid for the HD 4890.
Background: Ati Radeon HD 4890
It seems like for the HD 4890 only the GPU and memory frequencies have been increased - but there are already rumors around that say otherwise. Basis for the increased frequencies is the 55 nm production process, which has been quite perfected by now. 850 to 900 MHz appear to be possible for the RV790 GPU; the RV770 of the HD 4870 is clocked to 750 MHz. As the GDDR5 memory of the HD 4890 (Single) is regarded, AMD wants to reach 3,900 million transactions/s - RV770 based cards reach 3,600 MT/s.
