AMD RV790 just an overclocked RV770?
According to latest reports the RV790 is just an RV770 with increased clock speeds.
Xbit Labs have learned from industry related sources that AMD's RV790 GPU is identical in construction with the RV770 and just offers increased clock speeds. The higher frequencies are said to be possible because of slight design adjustments.
The numbers of Stream Processors (800), texture units (40) and ROPs (16) won't be changes apparently as well as the 256 Bit memory interface and the support of GDDR3 to GDDR5. The final card will be called Radeon HD 4890 says Xbit Labs. An X2 variant is possible, too.
So the situation bears resemblance to the year 2003 when Ati introduced the Radeon 9800 XT (R360) which had been a pimped Radeon 9800 Pro (R350).
