Big order from AMD said to end short-time work at TSMC and UMC
It seems like AMD causes an upwards trend for chip manufacturers with the RV740 and RV790 GPUs. TSMC and UMC apparently have received a big order and thus have lowered short-time work.
The Chinese Commercial Times reports that AMD issued a big order to TSMC and UMC. Apparently the two companies are supposed to produce RV790 and RV740 chips since AMD seems to be planning on selling those GPUs big time.
All in all 30,000 wafers will be used for the GPUs. The chips are produced in 12 inch wafers. Thus the short-time work the two companies had to issue because of decreasing demand might be canceled. According to reports the factories have been running at only 50 to 60 percent of the actual capacity in the end.
