Will Nvidia relabel the 8800 GT to 9800 GT?
Up to now rumors said that Nvidia wants to reissue the 8800 GT as 9800 GT. In order to justify the renaming, the card were said to support Hybrid Power. Now some new rumors say that Nvidia would relabel already produced 8800 GTs.
Hybrid Power is a technology that sends a graphics card to sleep mode with the aid of a control chip and an adequate Nforce motherboard. Except the 9800 and the GTX 200 series none of the current Nvidia cards has such a chip.
The 9800 GT was said to be an 8800 GT with this special control chip installed. But according to Expreview, Nvidia takes the easy way and allows partners to rename the big amounts of existing 8800 GTs via BIOS update. The same was already done with the 8800 Gs which was reintroduced as 9600 GSO. AMD is said to have climbed on the bandwagon, too and rename the HD 3000 series into HD 4000.
As long as one gets the same product for the same amount of money, there is nothing, except the hint of more performance by higher numbers, that could be opposed to this behavior. But it nevertheless leaves a bad taste in one's mouth. Especially those people who wanted to have a card with Hybrid Power should take a closer look at what they are actually buying.
