Nvidia: Refresh of the Geforce 9 mobile series
Today Nvidia's new mobile GPUs from the Geforce 9M series were released. PCGH reveals, which new features are introduced.
A year ago Nvidia introduced the GF8M series, which for the first time brought a Unified Shader architecture to the mobile area. The chips of that time originated from the desktop GPUs G86 and G84. At the end of 2007 they were followed by the top dogs Geforce 8800M GTX and GTS on a G92 base (65 nanometers structure). Nvidia used the turn of the year not only to introduce new chips, but also to update the nomenclature: All of the graphics processors to be released in 2008 bear a 9 at the beginning of their name. The first ones are the Geforce 9300M and 9500M GS.

The mobile GPUs, which were launched today, are still based on the 65 nanometers G92. If you should have expected DX 10.1 features, you are going to be disappointed. The chart above list all the newcomers from the Geforce 9600M GT down to the low cost solution 8200M G. The latter doesn't have a Hybrid SLI support. All the other GPUs are able to handle the most important aspect of this feature, which enables you to couple an integrated GF9M with a second one, or to deactivate it in order to save energy.
The Geforce 8800M GTX and GTS are still the spearhead of the mobile segment. According to their age and structure, they lake the new features. PCGH thinks there will be and adequate adjustment within this year.
The slogan is "Evolution not Revolution”: The performance of the new GPUs didn't change a lot compared to the GF8M series. Surprisingly the 9600M GT delivers the same performance as the 8700M GT, which is produces in the energy hungry 80 nanometers structure. Nvidia is closing the gap between the 9500M GS and the 8800M GTS.
A rule of thumb: If the name has an "8” at the second position, the GPU has (noticeable) more than 32 Shader ALUs. If there is a "6”, there are 32 arithmetic units. A "4” signals 16 ALUs, everything beneath that has got only eight. The 9500M gets out of the line: While the G version has only 16 units, the GS version has 32. If you think about mobile gaming, than you should buy a card with at least 32 ALUs.
