Will the GTX 280 get a GX2 version like the 9800 GX2?
Currently AMD does the same thing with the Radeon HD 4870 X2 as Nvidia once did with the 7950 GX2. With a dual GPU solution they try to create the fastest graphics card. Nvidia’s CEO Jen-Hsun Huang comments on this strategy, like he did before the release of the Geforce 9800 GX2. Nvidia would have been the first company to combine two graphics chips in that way. Such a product would also have its advantages and disadvantages and in regards of scalability a single GPU would be the better solution – at the same time he said that SLI would scale better that Crossfire.
When questioned about Nvidia’s plans in that matter, Huang said: The best approach is to do both. If we could offer a single chip solution at 399, it certainly doesn’t preclude us from building a two-chip solution at something higher. So I think that having the right price, right product at each price point and the best-performing product at each price point is the most important thing. So it could be that Nvidia will release dual GPU card.
