News about Nvidia's 55 nanometer chip GT200b
According to Nordichardware, Nvidia can't wait to get the GT200's successor to the market.
With more than 1.4 billion transistors the GT200 is a complex chip. Because of its size it would take if made in 65 nanometer structure, yields would be below 40 percent per wafer. Such a chip would cost 100 to 110 US-Dollars.
Nvidia's partners aren't happy about the low quantity of course and some of them didn't even get any GT200. A Die shrink could solve the problem and increase the chip yield by 40 to 50 percent per wafer. With only 470 square millimeters a GT200b would be small enough to fit 120 Dies on a single wafer.
Given the ongoing price battle with AMD, Nvidia might want to replace the GT200 as soon as possible.
