Is AMD's R700 faster than the Geforce GTX 280?
It seems like "CJ” got his hands on insider information. In the forum of beyond3d.com he published 3D Mark Vantage scores that are said to be those of a Radeon HD 4870 X2 (codename: R700) , which is equipped with two RV770 GPUs.
According to CJ the HD 4870 X2 would score more than 5,500 points in the "extreme” preset of the 3D Mark Vantage. For comparison: A Geforce GTX 280 is said to reach 4,800 points in the same preset - of course it is unknown if the remaining system components were the same for both cards.
The "extreme” preset delivers increased shader complexion, a resolution of 1,920x1,200, 4x FSAA and 16x AF. Additionally the share of the CPU result is reduced to five percent and thus is only valued a third compared to the default settings.
Now the question is: Are CJ's sources going to be correct once more? And how much optimization has been done to the drivers - AMD could get some more out from multi GPU techniques, while Nvidia could use CUDA PhysX to score in the CPU tests.
