AMD: Radeon HD 4870 X2 ready, but no launch before August?
Since the Radeon HD 4850 was able to proof its capabilities in many benchmark tests and reviews, many users are waiting anxious for the release of the big sister, the Radeon HD 4870 and the high-end version R700.
Contrary to the HD 4870, which is said to be launched on the eight of July, there is no sign of an official release date for the R700. But the always well informed rumor mill, fudzilla.com reports, that they were able to see a Radeon HD 4870 X2 in action. Good news for those of you who value a uniformly case interior: AMD is said to use a black PCB again.
But the good message unfortunately is closely followed by a bad one. The HD 4850 X2 are said not to be released before August, 2008. Although the hardware is ready, AMD is supposed to optimize the drivers. A scenario similar to the launch of the HD 3870 X2, which was ready at roughly the same time as the HD 3870, but the release was delayed because of driver optimization.
A positive aspect of a later launch would be that AMD would be able to closely observe the performance of Nvidia's GTX 260/280 and therefore could improve the R700's performance if necessary.
