AMD R700: alleged pictures of a Radeon HD 4870 X2
They show a dual chip graphics cards, which is said to be AMD's expected R700. It consists of two RV770XT GPUs, like those on the HD 4870, combined on a single PCB. The 16 memory chips that can be seen, seem to me made by Quimonda and are said to have an overall capacity of one GiByte.
AMD is also supposed to give the R700 a black PCB. But the presence of the PLX chip is rather striking. It was used with the Radeon HD 3870 X2 but was said to be unnecessary with the new generation.
Its main task is the communication between the two GPUs, but the chip is limited to a bandwidth of 8 GB per second, because of what AMD was supposed to have decided for communication via VRAM. With 160 GB per second this could offer a lot more bandwidth and annoying micro stutters should be avoidable.
It is not clarified, if both GPUs have full access to the 1,024 MiByte video memory or if the communication is made via the PLX chip and each chip has only 512 MiByte available to itself.
