AMD announces first 40 nanometer GPUs
With the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and HD 4830 AMD announces two new graphics cards based on a 40 nanometer GPU.
Both the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 and the Mobility Radeon HD 4830 have 640 stream processors and a 128 Bit memory interface. While the smaller Mobility Radeon HD 4830 only has GDDR3/DDR3 memory the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 will be equipped with GDDR5 RAM. The cards will have 826 million transistors.
In comparison to the 55 nanometer Mobility Radeons HD 4870 and HD 4850 the number of transistors is reduced by 130 million and the number of stream processors is decreased by 160 units. The memory interface with 128 Bit has only half the width as the two 55 nanometer chips.
While the GPU of the Mobility Radeon HD 4860 will run with 650 Megahertz AMD announces clock speeds of 450/600 Megahertz for its little sister. No information is known about the power consumption. According to AMD the first netbooks with Mobility Radeon HD 4860 und HD 4830 will be released in the second quarter 2009.
