Catalyst 9.1 display driver - AF Bug included
The Catalyst 9.1 WHQL, the latest version of the graphics card driver for all current Radeon cards, is ready for download but has an AF bug.
As usual the Catalyst 9.1 WHQL can be found on game.amd.com. As a registered member of the PC Games Hardware online community the driver is also available for download on our server.
With the slightly belated release on 28th January AMD sets the stage for the self-imposed aim to publish 12 drivers per year.
AMD's current official Radeon driver Catalyst 9.1 WHQL was available for the press two days ago. In the meantime the driver is also hosted on the AMD website where the 9.1 WHQL download only linked to the 8.12 WHQL first. The reason for this exceptional delay is probably a known bug.
Catalyst 9.1 WHQL: AF bug is still existent
We already reported about the AF bug of the 8.12 Hotfix under D3D10. Among other things it causes a lower picture quality in Crysis Warhead and Assassin's Creed because driver forced anisotropic filtering is simply not displayed. Even Stalker Clear Sky suffers from the AF absence but here the in-game regulator puts things right. AMD confirmed the AF bug immediately.
The Catalyst 9.1 WHQL Release Notes confirm what we already found out two days ago:
The Catalyst Control Center 3D settings option Anisotropic Filtering does not currently work when running DirectX 10 applications - Anisotropic Filtering must be enabled within the application
So the users have to do without AF in D3D10 titles if this option is not available in-game. This is the case for Crysis, Crysis Warhead as well as Assassin's Creed. For us as testers it means that due to the circumstances the corresponding games and settings will be omitted in the forthcoming driver test - we cannot compare two drivers when one of them lacks AF.
Catalyst 9.1 WHQL: Multithread optimization under D3D10?
Previously AMD said that the performance improvements within the Catalyst 8.12 Hotfix would not be integrated in the Catalyst 9.1. At the moment we are checking this statement, in our brief test we could not discover any improvements and also the release notes remain silent about the issue.
