AMD Athlon II X3 and X4 in September, Phenom II X4 965 with 125W confirmed - Update: Athlon II X3 delayed until October
Although AMD is not on site at the Gamescom PC Games Hardware nevertheless learned from sources close to the company that the X3 and X4 versions of the Athlon II will be released in mid-September - so shortly after Intel's Lynnfield.
Up to now the Athlon II is available as dual-core version only. In contrast to the Phenom series none of the Athlon IIs has L3 cache - but therefore the processors are much cheaper.
Not all new Athlon II models will become available immediately, according to our sources the versions X3 405e and X3 425 (triple-core) as well as X4 605e and X4 620 (quad-core) will be released first. The faster processors X3 435 and X4 630 will follow in fall.
|Processor||Cores||Code name||Frequency||L2 Cache (total)||TDP|

|Athlon II X2 240||2||Regor||2.8 GHz||2 MiByte||65 Watt|
|Athlon II X2 240e||2||Regor||2.8 GHz||2 MiByte||45 Watt|

|Athlon II X3 425||3||Rana||2.7 GHz||1.5 MiByte||95 Watt|
|Athlon II X3 435||3||Rana||2.9 GHz||1.5 MiByte||95 Watt|
|Athlon II X4 600e||4||Propus||2.2 GHz||2 MiByte||45 Watt|
|Athlon II X4 605e||4||Propus||2.3 GHz||2 MiByte||45 Watt|
|Athlon II X4 620||4||Propus||2.6 GHz||2 MiByte||95 Watt|
|Athlon II X4 630||4||Propus||2.8 GHz||2 MiByte||95 Watt|
Furthermore there will also be a 125W version of AMD's current top processor, the Phenom II X4 965 Black Edition, released this year. The fastest AMD processor was launched only the previous week with an unexpectedly high TDP of 140W. Lowering the maximal thermal power loss doesn't even require a new stepping and the new 965 will still be C2 stepping. But new C3 processors also will be released - the will primarily be used for the efficient "e” versions of the Phenom II.
Update: September 18, 2009
New information about the launch of the Athlon II X3 processors is available. Referring to sources close to AMD Xbit Labs wants to have learned that AMD's forthcoming triple-core chips (codename Rana) will be released at a later time than expected. Apparently the release has been rescheduled to the launch of Windows 7 on October 22.
