AMD launches 45 nm chip pilot production
The new boss at AMD, Dirk Meyer, revealed in a conference call, that the pilot production of 45 Nanometer chips has been started.
According to Xbitlabs.com the first products are said to hit the markets in Q4 2008. This would put AMD behind schedule, since in 2006 the transition to the 45 Nanometers process was planned for midyear 2008.
AMD hopes to have done a full transition of all production capacities to 45 Nanometer by midyear 2009 - then the equivalent processors could be mass-produced. It is unknown if the enhanced production process affects the possible clock speeds or the energy consumption.
