Core i7-920 in D0 Stepping: 4,641 MHz possible with air cooling
Extreme overclocker "PcCI2iminal” pushed Intel's D0 stepping Core i7-920 with air cooling to its limit.
For the Core i7-920 (ES) a CPU-Z validation of 4,641.03 MHz was possible whereas a rather high voltage of 1.56 Volt was necessary. With 4,410 MHz and 1.52 Volt the pre-series model could run the 3DMark 06 successfully. Prime 95 runs while overclocked to 4,305 MHz. The reference clock can be increased to a very high level and runs Prime 95 with 222 MHz on the Biostar Tpower X58 motherboard. Thanks to the "Turbo” mode the multiplier could be increased to a maximum of 24 for individual cores as it is the case with the current available i7-920 chips.
According to overclocker "PcCI2iminal” little effort was needed to achieve the results with the Core i7-920 (ES). The D0 stepping of the i7-920 is said to stay cooler than with previous i7-920 CPUs even though the Core Temp figures (57 °C in Prime 95 at 4,305 MHz and 1.52 V) are not believable. The Tj. maximum figure which is read by Core Temp has decreased from 100 °C to 92 °C. In our picture gallery we present the material of the Xtremesystems forum.
